WALLBOARDS & ACCESSORIES - FAQs

Drywall Types & Terminology

What’s the difference between drywall, Sheetrock, and wallboard? “Drywall” is the common generic term for the interior gypsum panels used to finish walls and ceilings. “Sheetrock” is actually USG’s brand name that became so widely used it’s now often used generically, much like Kleenex. “Wallboard” is a broader umbrella term for any panel used in interior or exterior wall applications. Best Supply carries drywall, Sheetrock-brand panels, and the full range of wallboard products.
What is MR (mold-resistant) drywall? MR (mold-resistant) drywall uses facing paper treated with mold inhibitors to resist mold and mildew in moisture-prone areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. Depending on the manufacturer, these panels are colored green, blue, or purple so they’re easy to identify on the job. Best Supply carries mold- and moisture-resistant drywall, including green board and purple board.
What is lightweight drywall? Lightweight drywall is a standard-size gypsum panel engineered to weigh noticeably less than traditional board—often around 25–30% lighter—making it easier and faster to carry, lift, and hang, with less strain on crews. It’s commonly used for 1/2″ interior walls and ceilings where the reduced weight speeds installation. Best Supply carries lightweight drywall alongside standard gypsum panels.

Thickness & Fire Rating

What thickness of drywall do I need? Drywall thickness is chosen for the application: 1/4″ is a flexible board for curved surfaces and skim-over work, 3/8″ is used for patching and some remodels, 1/2″ is the standard for most interior walls and ceilings, and 5/8″ is used for fire-rated assemblies, ceilings (to resist sagging), and better sound control. Best Supply stocks gypsum wallboard from 1/4″ up to 1″ thick, so you can match the panel to the job. Always confirm fire-rated and code requirements against your building code.
What’s the difference between fire code and non-fire code drywall? Fire code drywall is manufactured to slow the spread of fire and is required in most commercial construction, while non-fire code drywall is the standard board used in many residential applications. Fire code panels are typically 5/8″ thick (and include Type X and Type C), whereas standard residential drywall is typically 1/2″ thick. The requirement for a given wall depends on the building type and assembly. Best Supply carries both fire code and standard drywall; always confirm the required rating against your local building code.
What’s the difference between Type X and Type C fire-rated drywall? Both Type X and Type C are fire-rated gypsum panels with cores reinforced by glass fibers, but Type C contains more additives and performs better under fire, providing greater fire resistance and less shrinkage—so it’s specified where a higher-rated or specific tested assembly requires it. Type X is the common 5/8″ fire-code board used in many rated walls and ceilings, while Type C is often called out for certain floor-ceiling and shaft assemblies. Best Supply carries both Type X and Type C drywall; always build to the specific tested UL assembly and local code.

Finishing Accessories

What are the different types of drywall joint compound (mud)? Drywall joint compound, or “mud,” comes in two main forms: ready-mixed (premixed) compound that’s ready to use out of the bucket, and setting-type compound (often called “hot mud”) that’s mixed from powder and hardens by chemical reaction for a faster, stronger set. Ready-mixed is further sold as all-purpose (good for most coats), taping (for embedding tape), and topping (for smooth final coats). Best Supply carries drywall mud and joint compound in the common types, along with the tape, texture, and tools to finish the job.
What’s the difference between mesh tape and paper tape for drywall? Paper tape is the traditional choice for drywall joints—it’s strong, resists stretching, and has a crease for inside corners, but it must be embedded in a bed of compound. Self-adhesive mesh tape sticks directly to the board and is easier for beginners and quick patches, but it’s generally used with setting-type compound for the first coat because it’s less rigid than paper. The right tape depends on the joint and the compound being used. Best Supply carries both mesh tape and paper tape.
What types of corner bead and trim do you carry? Corner bead protects and finishes drywall corners, and it comes in several styles: metal corner bead for durable, traditional outside corners, paper-faced bead for a clean finish that bonds well with compound, and vinyl bead for moisture resistance and flexibility. Tearaway beads—including zip bead and rip bead—create a clean, caulkable edge where drywall meets a window, ceiling, or dissimilar material, then strip away for a finished reveal. Best Supply carries corner beads, tearaway (zip and rip) beads, and the fasteners and compound to install them.
