Fastener Basics & Selection

What’s the difference between fine-thread and coarse-thread drywall screws? Fine-thread drywall screws are designed for fastening drywall to metal studs, where their sharper, closely spaced threads bite and hold in steel without stripping, while coarse-thread screws are made for wood studs and framing, where their wider threads grip wood fibers securely. Using the wrong thread for the substrate is a common cause of screws that strip out or spin. What’s the difference between self-drilling and self-tapping screws? Self-tapping screws have a sharp point that cuts their own threads as they’re driven, but they’re meant for softer or thinner materials—or a pre-drilled pilot hole—rather than boring through heavy metal on their own. Self-drilling screws (often called Tek screws) have a drill-bit-shaped tip that bores through heavier-gauge metal and taps the threads in one step, with no pilot hole needed. What screw length do I need for drywall and other materials? What type of anchor should I use for concrete, block, or brick? The right masonry anchor depends on the base material and the load: for light and medium-duty fastening into concrete, block, or brick, a Tapcon-style concrete screw threads directly into a pre-drilled hole and can be removed, while heavier structural loads in solid concrete typically call for a wedge anchor or a chemical (adhesive) anchor.
